Family Law
This department operates within the Court Department. It is run as a team of 4 with 2 Solicitors and 2 back-up staff. The 2 Solicitors comprise, Mrs Susan Wightman, Partner and Senior Solicitor and Miss Gillian Gaffney, Assistant Solicitor. The back-up staff comprises of Valerie Dow Secretary/Personal Assistant to Mrs Susan Wightman and Ann McNeill, Secretary/Personal Assistant to Miss Gillian Gaffney.
The Family Law Department provides legal and practical advice upon the personal, financial and legal aspects flowing from divorce and separation, upon parental rights, responsibilities and obligations relating to children such as residence and contact (custody and access pre 1995), maintenance for children via the Child Support Agency or otherwise, maintenance for spouses, adoption, financial and personal matters flowing from separation between co-habiting couples with and without children, and all matters relating to the legal aspects of a "family" breakdown. We can give guidance upon funding of legal fees, vat and outlays in and out of Court under the Legal Aid Scheme, operated by the Scottish Legal Aid Board.
Susan J Wightman
Susan was enrolled as a Solicitor in Scotland in November 1987. She practiced Civil and Criminal Law, including Family Law until 1991 in Peterhead when she moved to Perth and joined Kippen Campbell. She has been a Partner with Kippen Campbell since 1996. She enjoyed the Family Law aspects of Court work to the extent that she was granted accreditation as a Specialist in Family Law by the Law Society of Scotland in 1997 which accreditation was renewed by the Law Society in 2002 and 2007. Since 1997, Susan has practiced solely Family Law and has a particular interest in the financial aspects of separating spouses or co-habiting couples.
Susan is Perth's first Female Accredited Specialist in Family Law, a Notary Public and a member of the Family Law Association. She is also qualified as a Collaborative Family Lawyer
Outwith law, Susan spends her time away from the office with her family. She has a particular interest in youth football and training and taking part in charity events.
Gillian Gaffney
Gillian gained her degree in Scots law from the University of Aberdeen. Thereafter, she attended the University of Dundee and attained the Diploma in Legal Practice. Since being enrolled as a Solicitor in Scotland in 2003 Gillian has practised predominantly in Family Law.
Gillian spent 4 years working in Livingston, West Lothian, as a Family Law Solicitor prior to joining us in February 2008. She is also a Notary Public and a member of the Family Law Association.
In her spare time, Gillian plays squash, is an avid reader and enjoys foreign travel.
